During China’s Two Sessions in early March this year, Health Times, one of China’s most influential healthcare media, hosted a panel discussion in Beijing, featuring three leading experts and researchers within the medical and health economics community. The three experts had a procative dialogue about the opportunities and challenges of diagnosing and treating rare diseases.

On March 11, Professor Xia Weibo, director of the Endocrinology Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital and former chairman of the Chinese Society of Osteoporosis and Bone Mineral Research; Luo Xiaoping, director of the pediatric department of Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science & Technology and vice chairman of Chinese Pediatric Society of Chinese Medical Association; Wu Jing, professor of the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology Tianjin University and vice chairman of Pharmaceutical Economics Professional Committee of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association attended the event. They discussed various topics, including suggestions for diagnosing and treating rare diseases, raising public awareness, and improving the healthcare security system for patients with rare diseases.

“Along the journey of improving health outcomes across the country, we should leave no one behind. I want to call for the action from the whole society to pay attention to rare diseases. We should also encourage more charities to join the government, HCPs, and patients in the efforts of improving the medical support to help patients get back to normal life,” said Professor Xia.

Rare diseases need the whole society’s attention, and most rare diseases start in childhood. The key to ensuring patients’ full participation in society is to ensure the early identification, early diagnosis, early treatment, and long-term management of rare diseases.” said Professor Luo.

“Through our exploration in the past few years, China has established a consensus on building a multi-party and multi-level healthcare security system for the reimbursement of rare disease medicines. Our goal is not to give up any small group on this road, which requires our joint efforts,” Professor Wu said.
